Dunn’s River Falls is one of the most popular attractions to visit in Jamaica. The unique waterfall, also called a travertine waterfall, is the only one of its kind in the Caribbean that empties into the sea.
Climbing up the picturesque limestone terraces and pools is a rite of passage many enjoy. Here are some key details you need to know before your trip.
Dry and Wet Climb
Visitors looking for a bit of adventure without getting wet can do the dry climb, which offers a path along the falls and includes handrails. The wet climb involves walking in the cascading waters, so bathing suits will be needed. Do note that only the wet climb allows visitors to reach the summit. Depending on your athletic abilities and how crowded the falls are the ascent can take 40 minutes to an hour and a half.
The wet climb can be challenging, and you’ll typically see a human chain of hikers holding hands for stability while taking on the 180-foot high waterfall. Due to the potential risks involved, the climb is not recommended for those under 3 feet tall, pregnant women, or other individuals with serious health issues or physical ailments.
Other Features at the Dunn’s River Falls Park
Besides the main waterfall, the park also offers a children’s waterpark and garden, craft market, and cafeteria where you can get delicious local favorites such as jerk chicken.
What to Pack
If you plan on doing the wet climb, it’s recommended that you bring swimwear and water shoes as the falls can be very slippery, especially where the current is strong.
The park has lockers and changing rooms available, so you can also bring a change of clothes to wear after your hike.
When to Visit
Dunn’s River Falls is open every day from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. On days when cruise ships dock in Ocho Rios, the park opens at 7 a.m.
As you can imagine, Dunn’s River Falls will be much more crowded when ships are docked for the day. To avoid this, check the Ocho Rios port schedule when choosing a day to visit the park.
