No trip to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is complete without a visit to the Tulum Ruins.
Perched alongside the edge of a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Ocean, the popular Mayan archeological site provides visitors with the chance to explore the ancient walled city while enjoying picturesque views.
Here are the top 5 tips you should know for your excursion to the ruins to make the most out of your trip.
1. Arrive Early
As one of the most visited sites in the area, the Ruins become crowded pretty quickly by late morning, especially when large tour buses arrive.
For the best experience, plan on visiting close to the opening time (8-9 a.m.) for a quieter tour as well as better photo opportunities!
2. Bring Water, a Hat, and Good Walking Shoes
The archeological site has very few shaded areas and can get extremely hot by the afternoon.
There is a fair amount of walking between the stone structures where you may be exposed to the elements, so be sure to bring plenty of water, protection from the sun (hat and sunscreen), and good walking shoes.
3. Don’t Forget Your Swimsuit!
Just below the ruins, there’s a beautiful beach you can swim in.
Especially after walking around in the heat, a dip in the waters will be the perfect way to cool down.
As a bonus, you will often see iguanas hanging around the area catching some sun.
4. Bring Pesos
Finding an ATM near the site could be difficult, and paying by card may not be an option.
While vendors in the area may accept US dollars, the exchange rate may not be in your favor.
Your best bet is to bring enough pesos to last you for the day, including the 80 pesos entrance fee per person, 100-150 pesos for parking if you drive, and a little extra if you plan on shopping.
5. Plan to Spend 1-2 Hours There
If you’re planning just to explore the ruins, a full walking tour will take around an hour.
You can expect to spend up to two hours in the area if you’re thinking about enjoying the beach in addition to exploring the ruins.
