Ready to make your vacation dreams a reality?
Dubrovnik is beautiful, no doubt about it. It’s earned its spot on many a bucket list, and it’s often the first place people think of when they imagine Croatia. But what most travelers don’t realize is that Croatia has so much more to offer once you step outside the Dubrovnik spotlight.
And if we’re being honest, Dubrovnik can feel a bit crowded these days. There are just too many people packed into a small space, with cruise ships and lines at every viewpoint. It’s still worth seeing, of course, but it doesn’t have to be the whole story.
But if you are like me, a traveler who enjoys taking their time, discovering the destination, and discovering those places reserved for those who dare to go outside of the tourist paths, this is your list for where to go in Croatia beyond Dubrovnik.
Split: Where Old Meets Everyday
Split is just an understated spot, and Roman ruins are part of their daily life. The Diocletian’s Palace, which is technically a historical site in which people still live. You will find this beautiful coffee shop hidden into a 4th century stone wall and the Adriatic sea shimmering just a few steps away.
It just feels real. You get to enjoy a walk down the Riva in the morning, and you will see people living their lives without feeling like a tourist spot. Then you can hop on the ferry and go to Brač or Šolta, but don’t rush. This is a city that’s meant to be lingered in.
Where To Go In Croatia: Istria
Istria, if you are a foodie like me, and you enjoy long lunches, the smell of truffles and the countryside side, you’ll love Istria. It is tucked up in the northwest corner of the country, it feels almost Italian as part of Venetian history runs through here. Rovinj is the perfect coastal town with lovely small streets and waterfront restaurants. You can also visit the villages of Motovun and Grožnjan, which feel almost frozen in time.
Think olive groves, stone houses, little wine cellars with handwritten signs, and no rush whatsoever. This region is known for truffle hunting, fresh seafood, local wines, and some of the friendliest people you’ll meet. It’s not flashy, but it’s rich in flavor, beauty, and heart.
Hvar and Korčula
Hvar and Korčula are two beautiful islands with two different moods. Hvar is a lively island with amazing spots to party, but also has these incredible lavender fields, amazing coves, and wineries within its hills. On the other hand, Korčula is a beautifully preserved old town. With a gentle rhythm perfect for slowing down, it is a place that has this romantic vibe.
Where To Go In Croatia: Plitvice Lakes
When you’re ready to step away from the coast and into nature, Plitvice Lakes is where you want to go. This national park looks almost unreal with it’s turquoise lakes connected by wooden pathways, waterfalls around every corner, and forest all around you. It’s incredibly peaceful if you go at the right time.
The trick is to stay overnight nearby so you can enter early before all the day-trip excursionists arrive. Then you can take in the views and fill your camera roll.
Croatia’s Hidden Gems
Beyond these amazing destinations in Croatia, there are a few other small towns worth your time, such as Šibenik, a small coastal city with striking architecture and fewer tourists than Split or Dubrovnik. The old town is compact, charming, and full of history.
Another coastal city is Zadar, known for its breathtaking sunsets, as it has a relaxed and more artistic vibe. It also features Roman ruins, offering a blend of both worlds. Then, Mljet is one of the quietest islands in Croatia. Home to a national park, lakes, and almost no crowds. It’s perfect for those who want to unplug and reset.
Croatia has so many hidden gems and places that while not well-known, offer incredible experiences, sights, and scenery for those who enjoy adventure, partying, and also for those who just want to take their time and savor the local cuisine.
You get to explore Croatia in your own way and choose the places that will fill your heart. And if you’re not quite sure where to begin, and make this trip a reality, that’s what I’m here for. Let’s plan the version of Croatia that fits you, not the one the guidebooks tell you to do!
