Ready to make your vacation dreams a reality?
If you’ve never been to Antigua before, you might be wondering what to expect while you’re on the photogenic island. Having a little bit of background knowledge about your destination can ease stress levels and provide a more enriching experience.
While there’s an endless amount of information you could learn about beautiful Antigua, here are some of the main things to know so that you can be as prepared as possible for your trip.
Antigua is a Former British Colony
As a former British colony, Antigua might not feel too far from home. Its official language is English, and many historical sites from the British era still remain, such as the UNESCO World Heritage site Nelson’s Dockyard.
The familiar atmosphere is perfect for travelers looking for a tropical escape that doesn’t require much adjustment. However, it’s important to note that because of its British roots, the roads in Antigua are opposite from the U.S. This means you’ll have to get used to driving on the left!
Antigua is a Small Island, But Getting Around Takes Time
Antigua is tiny: just 13 miles across and 108 square miles in total. Keep in mind that the road conditions are not the same as the paved highways you might be used to. While it is possible to drive around the island several times within a day, be sure to budget plenty of additional time to get from one destination to the next. What might be a 20-minute drive back home could take double the amount of time in Antigua.
Antigua is Home to 365 Beaches
That’s right, famously known for its 365 beaches, you could visit a new beach every day in Antigua for an entire year. Antigua’s beaches truly deliver the perfect experience for all types of visitors with its pristine white-sand beaches and clear turquoise waters to lively shores with endless water sports and activities.
Antigua Hosts an International Sailing Event Every Spring
Typically held at the end of April, Antigua Sailing Week is an annual event that attracts sailing enthusiasts and spectators from all over the globe. This world-class regatta is an exciting event to check out for those interested, but it can make for a more crowded vacation. If you prefer a quieter visit to Antigua, it’s best to avoid planning a trip during the festival.
