Jamaica is famously known as the birthplace of reggae legend Bob Marley. While many visiting the country might stay close to the tourist resorts in Ocho Rios, those interested in learning more about Marley’s history and the real Jamaica can take a pilgrimage to the iconic musician’s home village and important locations from his life in Kingston.
Nine Mile
Every year, thousands of Bob Marley fans complete this pilgrimage to pay their respects. The tour will take you to all of the essential landmarks of Marley’s life, including the home where he was born, the mausoleum where he’s entombed, and all of the neighborhood sights and natural scenery that inspired his music.
One of the main pilgrimage stops takes place about an hour and a half drive from Ocho Rios in Nine Mile, nestled in the mountains of St. Ann. The drive goes through the Jamaican countryside and hills, offering stunning and unique views many visitors miss out on the opportunity to see.
Kingston
Another pilgrimage stop is the capital city of Kingston. Marley spent most of his life here, and it’s home to several significant sites from his life.
The Bob Marley Museum
The Bob Marley Museum was the former mansion and last home of Marley until he died in 1981. It was also the site of the attempted assassination on his life that took place in 1976 and where the bullet holes can still be seen. Now, the building is a museum dedicated to showcasing Marley’s work and memorializing his life.
Tuff Gong International
Tuff Gong is the recording studio that the Marley family still uses today. It was moved to the present-day location after Marley’s death and currently houses much of Marley’s musical and recording equipment.
Trench Town
Trench Town is the shantytown neighborhood where Marley spent his early years and later included in his hits “Trench Town Rock” and “No Woman, No Cry.” Your tour guide can show you the main points of interest as well as the museum dedicated to the area’s history.
