One of the most memorable experiences to have during a trip to Mexico’s Caribbean
coast is swimming in a cenote.
These unique sinkholes come in so many shapes and forms, each providing visitors with a different experience.
The cenotes’ natural beauty and intriguing locations have made a splash recently across social media, and it’s no surprise why so many people from all across the world are eager to visit!
What are Cenotes?
So what exactly are cenotes?
Named after the Mayan word for “well,” cenotes are natural sinkholes that form after the roof of an underground cave collapses.
These pockets tend to fill with water due to underground rivers and rain, resulting in many
natural pools in Mexico perfect for swimming and exploring.
Cenotes Around Cancun
In the Yucatan area alone, there are over 6,000 cenotes. You can find some of the most
well-known ones just outside Cancun and around the Riviera Maya.
Cenote Dos Ojos, Tulum: Perhaps one of the most photographed cenotes, Dos Ojos is
an underground cenote that features small openings of natural light from above among
a series of primarily dark caverns.
Cenote Azul, Playa del Carmen: This cenote is open and without a roof. It’s
surrounded solely by the jungle vegetation and canopy.
Cenote Siete Bocas, Puerto Morelos: This cenote is named Siete Bocas, or “Seven
Mouths,” for its seven entrances to the cavern. Visitors can jump in from the opening
above ground or swim in the underground pool.
Cenote Ik Kil: Located just minutes away from Chichen Itza, it’s a popular destination
to cool off in after spending the day exploring the archeological ruins. The overhanging
vines and deep formation make Cenote Ik Kil one of the more picturesque to visit.
How to Visit
While many cenotes are easily accessible from along the main highway, an excursion
could be more convenient than visiting on your own.
Tours such as Project Expedition’s Express Tulum and Cenote Swim bundle together a visit to an archeological ruin with a trip to a nearby cenote.
Not only does this save you time from planning the day on your own, but it also includes transportation, so you don’t have to worry about renting a car or relying on taxis.
