Jamaica

Jamaica is one of the destinations I know most deeply, and one I recommend without hesitation for the right couple.

The Sandals properties throughout Jamaica are among the best all-inclusive experiences available anywhere. Consistently excellent, well-run, and genuinely warm. Sandals Royal Plantation in Ocho Rios is a boutique, adults-only property with a level of personal service most resorts simply don’t deliver. Sandals Montego Bay is livelier and more social. Sandals Negril sits on one of the best beaches in the Caribbean.

Knowing the difference matters. The Jamaica that’s right for a quiet, intimate honeymoon is not the same as the Jamaica that’s right for a couple who wants energy and a more social atmosphere. Both are wonderful. They just require choosing the right property.

Flights from KC to Jamaica usually require one connection, which is manageable. The island is warm, vibrant, and full of character that goes well beyond the resort gates for couples who want to explore.

Best suited for: couples who want an excellent all-inclusive experience, honeymooners who value warm and genuine hospitality, and anyone who wants a destination with real personality.

The Maldives

For couples who have always pictured their honeymoon as overwater bungalows, crystal lagoons, and complete separation from ordinary life, the Maldives delivers genuine privacy and luxury unlike anywhere else.

No destination does overwater accommodation the way the Maldives does. The water reaches that color. The mornings, when you step off your deck directly into a warm lagoon with no one else in sight, match exactly what you imagined.

The Maldives requires a long travel day from Overland Park, typically through a major hub. But almost every couple I’ve sent there comes home saying the same thing: they would have gone farther. The experience earns every hour of travel time.

This one is for: couples who prioritize absolute privacy and luxury, honeymooners who have dreamed specifically about overwater bungalows, and anyone willing to invest in an experience that genuinely delivers on the word “extraordinary.”

Bora Bora and Tahiti

Bora Bora sits in its own category. There are beautiful destinations and then there is Bora Bora. The lagoon color, the mountain backdrop, and the overwater bungalows all exist in the same frame at the same time.

French Polynesia costs more to reach from Kansas City than most destinations, and the price point reflects the experience. But for couples who want their honeymoon to feel genuinely extraordinary rather than just very good, this is where the conversation often ends.

Tahiti pairs well with Bora Bora as an island-hopping itinerary. Each island in French Polynesia carries its own character. Moorea is more adventurous. Bora Bora is pure romance. Taha’a is intimate and quiet. Combining two or three islands gives couples a range of experiences rather than a single note.

A natural choice for: couples who want the most visually stunning destination available, honeymooners for whom cost is secondary to the experience, and anyone who has held this specific vision of their honeymoon for years.

Mexico: Riviera Maya, Playa Mujeres, and Cabo San Lucas

Mexico is one of the most practical destinations for Overland Park couples because flight connections from Kansas City are relatively straightforward. The quality of all-inclusive properties has also risen significantly over the past decade.

Riviera Maya and Playa Mujeres offer some of the most beautiful resort properties in the Caribbean. Soft white sand, calm turquoise water, and luxury all-inclusive options that rival anything in the islands. Playa Mujeres has become one of my favorite recommendations for couples who want a truly elevated Mexico experience. The water is calmer, the resorts are newer, and the overall atmosphere is more refined than the busier Cancun hotel zone.

Cabo San Lucas appeals to a different kind of couple, those who want drama alongside luxury. The Pacific side of Mexico carries a rugged beauty the Caribbean side doesn’t. Cabo’s combination of excellent dining, whale watching, and desert landscapes makes it a genuinely distinctive honeymoon destination.

Worth considering if: you want a high-quality all-inclusive experience without a long travel day, your timeline doesn’t allow for an extended trip, or you want genuine luxury with easier logistics.

Hawaii

Hawaii suits couples who want the feeling of a tropical escape without leaving the country. When the idea of a passport or a long international flight feels like more than you want to navigate on top of wedding planning, Hawaii delivers.

Maui stands as the best choice for honeymooners within Hawaii. The Road to Hana, the sunrise from Haleakala, the beaches along the west coast — Maui offers natural beauty and genuine romance that holds up under scrutiny.

Kauai suits couples who want something quieter and greener, with a wilder, more dramatic landscape. The Big Island works for couples who want to see lava and snorkel with manta rays. Oahu is beautiful but more urban and busier than the other islands.

One practical note for Kansas City couples: flights to Hawaii from MCI usually run longer than Caribbean flights, often requiring a mainland connection. That travel time is worth factoring in.

The Fijian people are famously warm in a way that goes beyond hospitality training. The islands carry a lush, green beauty that feels different from the drier Caribbean or the stark luxury of the Maldives. Properties like the Intercontinental Fiji and the luxury resorts on private islands deliver exceptional experiences at price points slightly below comparable Maldives or Bora Bora options.

The travel day from Kansas City to Fiji is significant, usually involving a long flight through Los Angeles. But for couples who want something that feels genuinely far away, different, and deeply memorable, Fiji earns every hour.

Ideal for: couples who want something extraordinary but slightly off the beaten honeymoon path, honeymooners who value genuine warmth alongside luxury, and anyone who wants a South Pacific experience with a slightly smaller price tag than French Polynesia.
